This is what was pulled out of the water heater after 20 minutes of cleaning. This will improve the heat exchange of the system.

This is a tankless water heater that was installed a few years ago by another contractor that never told the customer about cleaning it on a regular basis. We were called to fix a water leak on the system and told the homeowner about the importance of cleaning it.
